The Story Behind Kingsbrae Arms

Kingsbrae Arms Country House Inn in St. Andrews By-The-Sea New Brunswick. Welcome to Kingsbrae Arms. It was our dream to create a property that would provide the experience of staying among friends in a private home. Our purchase of this venerable turn-of-the-century house in 1996 was something of a rescue effort. The building had been abandoned, and sorely neglected for nearly ten years before we came along and were captivated by its charm. Now after extensive restorations, this family home is once again receiving and entertaining guests. Our goal is to provide the ultimate country house experience.

Kingsbrae Arms Hotel located in beautiful St. Andrews By-The-Sea. Featuring luxury accommodations with 14 individually designed guest rooms and suites with ocean and garden views on our beautiful 5-star property.

At the turn of the century, St. Andrews had become something of a spa. Because of its location on a peninsula surrounded by trade winds and the sea, it offered relief from hay fever. William Van Horn himself, the man responsible for connecting the Canadian coasts via rail, built a spur from the main line to St. Andrews. There he built himself a palatial home where he spent some of the happiest years of his life. Soon wealthy families were booking parlour cars transporting whole households to St. Andrews for the summer months. Back then, locals would gather at the train station to watch the “swells” get off.

We are proud and pleased to be the trustees of this lovely property. During renovations, we took pains to preserve the historic charms of this house, and at the same time update its comforts to twenty-first century tastes without intruding. We invite our guests to enjoy this house as if it were their own home…and hope they find that same spirit here which so many have enjoyed for so many years. We invite you to book with us now.

Newfoundland’s Fogo Island Inn Named One of Top Three in Air Canada EnRoute’s 2013 “Canada’s Best New Restaurants”

Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland, Canada, has been selected as #3 of Canada’s Best New Restaurants for 2013 by enRoute, Air Canada’s award-winning in-flight magazine.

“The Fogo Island Inn is absolutely delighted by this recognition”, says Murray McDonald, Executive Chef of the newly-opened Fogo Island Inn. “With only four months behind us, we are honoured to be in the stellar company of our urban colleagues.”

The culinary team at Fogo Island Inn – led by Chef McDonald – is devoted to the use of local ingredients. The kitchen’s motto, “to find new ways with old things”, celebrates all that can be locally foraged, fished, hunted, and grown on Fogo Island.

During this past year, enRoute sought out newly opened restaurants instrumental in advancing Canada’s culinary identity. During a month-long gastronomic odyssey, 35 restaurants were visited and judged anonymously by international food and wine writer, Andrew Braithwaite.

“This year’s search wasn’t just about what was on the plate,” explains Braithwaite. “We went looking for good people who’ve dedicated themselves to delivering memorable experiences. There’s a terrific survivalist spirit bursting out of Chef McDonald’s kitchen, where most everything is made from scratch.

From chefs to sommeliers, these are talented people we want to champion. I think readers will be intrigued by the diversity in our 2013 Top 10 list.

The Top 10 restaurants are:

  1. Bar Isabel, Toronto
  2. Shoto, Toronto
  3. Fogo Island Inn, Newfoundland
  4. Supply and Demand, Ottawa
  5. Pidgin, Vancouver
  6. Carino Japanese Bistro, Calgary
  7. Maison Publique, Montreal
  8. Le Bouchon du Pied Bleu, Quebec City
  9. The Acorn, Vancouver
  10. Electric Mud, Toronto

“We’re very proud of the strong regional representation from coast to coast this year,” said Ilana Weitzman, the editor-in-chief of enRoute.

The Algonquin in St. Andrews, New Brunswick re-opens with an offer of luxury

Algonquin Resort guest room

A Maritime tradition in its second century of impeccable service, The Algonquin Resort is a Canadian landmark evoking the sensibilities of a distant past and offering a respite from contemporary life.

Overlooking the picturesque Passamaquoddy Bay, in St. Andrews by the Sea, New Brunswick, the 234-room Tudor-style “Castle-by-the-Sea” has been welcoming guests including heads of state, royalty and vacation and business travelers since 1889.

One of the first chefs at The Algonquin Resort, in the late 1800s, was the brilliant and respected Chef George F. Braxton. The Algonquin Resort is looking to honour the culinary great and learn more about the gastronomic history of the iconic resort.

“To piece together the history of The Algonquin Resort, we’re launching the Chef George Braxton Challenge,” Says General Manager, Tim Ostrem. “We’d love to connect with the ancestors of Braxton’s culinary team and fellow staff members who served our first generation of guests.”

Braxton is believed to be the first African-American man to lead a luxury resort kitchen and publish a cookbook. His philosophy of providing uncompromising quality continues to inspire the resort to this day, so much so, that The Algonquin named their new fine dining room Braxton’s Restaurant and Bar in his honour.

As The Algonquin Resort reopens in 2014, the resort is proud to honour and pay-respect to one of the legends of their seaside resort. They’re looking forward to inviting the descendants of Braxton and his co-workers to the grand opening.

If individuals have any information on George Braxton and/or the history of the Algonquin Resort, connect with the Algonquin Resort on Facebook {link} and Twitter {link}, or e-mail information to

Trout Point Lodge among world’s best hotel culinary schools

Trout Point Lodge has announced that it has placed number 5 on a list of the world’s top 10 hotel culinary schools just published by Fox News in the United States and curated by Gayot.com.

“Both globetrotting gourmets and rookie cooks should check out the world’s top 10 hotel culinary schools where everyone can take lessons while on holiday,” stated the article.

This Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, wilderness lodge was singled out as embodying cutting edge offerings for savvy tourists: “Rugged wilderness, sustainable food practices and cozy quarters that include freestanding cottages make this Atlantic Canada lodge one of our favorites.” The commentary authored by the food-oriented guide Gayot also praised Trout Point’s “innovative French Acadian cuisine.” The Lodge was the only hotel on the list representing Canada.

The online version of the article can be found at http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2013/11/08/top-10-hotel-culinary-schools/.
Other hotels among the top 10 include Villa Giona of Verona, Italy, and the Sazon Cooking School at Casa de Sierra Nevada, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Trout Point Lodge has earned 5 stars in the Inn category from Canada Select and is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Gayot was founded by André & Alain Gayot. André Gayot, who with his friends

Henri Gault and Christian Millau coined and promoted the term “Nouvelle Cuisine” in the early 1970s, has been directing sophisticated travelers to the world’s best restaurants, hotels, shops, sightseeing and cultural attractions for more than 45 years. His expertise provided a foundation for Gayot guides in the United States, beginning in 1981.

Alain Gayot, André’s son, participated in the launch of the American guide book series and began researching ways to distribute the content electronically, initially with Minitel technology in the early ’90s, later with partners of the Prodigy network, and finally on the web with AOL and other media companies.

Trout Point Lodge of Nova Scotia among world’s best says luxury hotel alliance

The 2014 World’s Best Hotels & Resorts Awards put on by Five Star Alliance has announced that Trout Point Lodge has been selected for both its “Top 50 World’s Best Hotels” and “World’s Best Hotel Restaurant” categories. The World’s Best Luxury Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Awards is an annual event since 2005. A team of luxury hotel experts selects finalists for the Awards from among more than 4400 luxury hotels worldwide. Washington, DC, based Five Star Alliance is the leading comprehensive online directory of luxury five star hotels. Five Star created the World’s Best 2014 to showcase properties that represent the best in unique experiences, class, guest feedback, and reputation. The Alliance first accepted Trout Point as a member property in 2007, but it has never previously won an award.

The Best Hotel Restaurants Award goes only to properties where “world-class restaurant is the proximity of fine-dining to luxury guestrooms,” according to the Alliance. “The World’s Best Hotel and Resort Restaurant means grand hotel dining within a luxury property. Michelin stars and top-starred Forbes Guide restaurants abound on our list of the top luxury hotel and resort restaurants.” “We’re honoured by the selection and greatly appreciate the restaurant award,” said co-owner and chef Vaughan Perret. “Everyone at the Lodge works extremely hard to provide guests with a truly exceptional dining experience, but given our wilderness location and size, we often don’t get noticed in the worldwide restaurant ratings.” Other Restaurant Award recipients include the the Michelin 3-star Meadowood Resort of California, renowned Inn at Little Washington in Virginia, the Dorchester in London, England, and the Michelin-starred AbaC Hotel & Restaurant in Barcelona, Spain. Earlier this month, Fox News named Trout Point Lodge among the world’s top 10 hotel culinary schools.

The Lodge also appears on the Five Star list of Top 50 World’s Best Hotels. Properties in this group “reflect the full array of exclusive options from the classic and iconic favorites to intimate and inviting inns to sprawling oceanfront resorts.” The 50 properties were selected using an algorithm based on the Alliance’s web site page views, bookings, feedback, and 3rd party sources, according to Five Star’s Courtney May. The Lodge was joined on the list by acclaimed luxury hotels such as the Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford, California, The Carlyle in New York City, and Hotel Danieli in Venice, Italy. Only three Canadian hotels were on the list, including Le Saint-Sulpice in Montreal, the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, and Trout Point.
